Duval County school administrators and law enforcement will meet with the Terry Parker High School community to talk about proactive safety measures Thursday after recent gun-related incidents.

Students are feeling unsafe after two teenagers were arrested last week for a shooting near a school-bus stop.

Jacksonville’s NAACP branch isn’t happy with Duval County Public Schools. On Monday, the group called for the community to demand better leadership from Superintendent Nikolai Vitti.

Scholarships are up for grabs to help Florida students pay for college.  And the application deadlines are approaching. 

One is from the Florida Association of Supervisors of Elections.  College students majoring in political science, public administration, business, journalism or mass communications have until March 14 to apply for one of three $1,200 scholarships.

Jacksonville’s A. Philip Randolph High School could become a vocational academy and West Jacksonville Elementary could switch to a fourth-through-eighth grade school for kids struggling to keep up.

Florida released school grades from the 2014-15 school year today. Duval’s district-wide score improved from a C to a B, with 41 A’s, 28 B’s, 41 C’s. 38 D’s and 21 F’s.

 

Updated Thurs 2/11 at 6:20 p.m.:

A Duval County School Board member said she wants Superintendent Nikolai Vitti fired. Connie Hall said that in a text message she sent in September to a district staffer.

A Miami lawyer requested the emails and texts of Hall and two other board members, and a copy of the records was provided to WJCT.

Duval County Public Schools will use a $1.2 million federal Student Improvement Grant to put new science labs in 11 underperforming elementary schools next school year.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti says the labs will focus on hands-on STEM education, meaning science, technology, engineering and math.

Six Duval County Schools will become more specialized in the fall.

Florida Students who are blind or have low vision met in Jacksonville Thursday for an annual Braille reading and writing competition.

For many purposes, Braille has been replaced by smartphone apps and other technologies.

But the Braille system, invented in 1821 by Louis Braille, is not dead yet.

Remember those spelling tests where the teacher called out the word and you wrote it down?  Blind children have spelling tests too when they’re learning Braille.
