The Duval County School Board unanimously voted to hold off on voting on new districtwide school identification cards at Tuesday’s meeting.

Duval County Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said he’s extremely concerned about state legislation that would encourage charter school takeovers of low-performing schools.

The bill, PCB EDC 17-03, passed the House education committee Thursday.

Duval County Superintendent Nikolai Vitti is now one of two finalists for Detroit Public Schools Community District superintendent after the third candidate, Orlando Ramos of Milwaukee Public Schools, dropped out Thursday night, according to Detroit NPR member station WDET.

Colleges Balk At Budget Cuts

TALLAHASSEE — State college presidents on Friday expressed dismay that the 28-school system is being targeted for three-quarters of the cuts in the Florida Senate's initial plan to trim $131 million in higher-education spending.

“It is of great concern that the first thing out of the chute is a 74 percent reduction impacting the Florida college system and it is directed at programs that support our most at-risk student populations,” said Ed Meadows, president of Pensacola State College and the chairman of the Council of Presidents, which represents all the state colleges.

The Duval County School district is lobbying the state for funding and local control during Florida's legislative session now underway.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti laid out the district's priorities Tuesday, saying the district needs more money for capital projects, like building maintenance and upgrades.

The Duval County School Board approved contract renewals for several charter schools without discussion, Tuesday. 

The schools include KIPP Voice Elementary, Mycroschool of Integrated Academies and Technologies, S.O.C.K Outstanding Students Academy and Waverly Academy.

The Duval County School Board will vote Tuesday on renewing several Duval County charter school contracts.

Charter schools are free public schools, but privately run. The school district doesn’t have a say on teachers or curriculum.


University of North Florida

The University of North Florida wants to recruit and retain more women in its engineering program. The college’s School of Engineering announced Thursday the Center for the Advancement of Women in Engineering aimed at doing just that.

Florida State College at Jacksonville is committing to help pay for school for first-time college students seeking an associate's degree. It’s designed to help lower-income students get an associate’s degree without debt.

The new program is called the FSCJ Promise, which will aid up to 1,000 new students a year. FSCJ will help  fund the first two years of tuition, books and fees for students after federal, state and local aid doesn’t meet their needs.
