05/27/16: Media Roundtable Week In Review; Kit Cummings; Empire Point Investment Club; Mike Bernos

Media Roundtable Week In Review

We discuss the week's biggest news stories with our roundtable of local journalists: Claire Goforth, Folio Weekly editor; Andrew Pantazi, Florida Times-Union reporter; A.G. Gancarski, Florida Politics writer;  and Tim Gibbons, Jacksonville Business Journal editor.

Topics include the debate this week between State Attorney Angela Corey and Public Defender Matt Shirk, the controversy surrounding a police-involved shooting in Jacksonville, and more.

Kit Cummings

He’s a renowned activist, speaker and author dedicated to reaching out to at-risk kids, reducing crime, rehabilitating young inmates, and inspiring young people to tap their power and potential.

Kit Cummings, founder of The Power of Peace Project, is in town for an appearance this week.

Cummings joins us with a preview of his talk at the Jacksonville Church of Christ Friday night.

Empire Point Investment Club

They’ve been meeting once a week, every month, since 1958.

The Empire Point Investment Club in Jacksonville’s St. Nicholas neighborhood claims to be the longest continually running stock club in America.

The club is made up of 22 elected members, and has had the same basic format for nearly 60 years: one hour of cocktails, one hour for dinner and one hour for business.

The club just celebrated its 700th meeting.

How have their stocks performed over the last half century?

We learn about the Empire Point Investment Club's history from members Susie Slappey and Howard Dyal.

Mike Bernos

Jacksonville Mike Bernos of the band Spice and the Po Boys joins us with a preview of their performance this weekend at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival.

Sean Birch joined the WJCT team in late 2011 and was with the company until 2016.
