10/13/2016: Pamela Goodwin; State Of The Arts; Drybar; Luckin On Dylan

After a federal judge ordered Florida to extend its voter registration deadline to Oct. 18, we spoke with League of Women Voters- Florida President Pamela Goodman. The LWV was one of the groups that filed a complaint against Governor Rick Scott, who refused to extend the deadline after Hurricane Matthew. Melissa Ross was also joined by Tony Allegretti from the Jacksonville Cultural Council, and Cressman Bronson and Kim Reckley from PNC Bank to discuss Thursday’s local State of the Arts luncheon and the local arts groups that were awarded PNC Arts Alive grants for 2016. Ross also spoke with Drybar founder Alli Webb, who opened her first Jacksonville salon this weekend in Brooklyn. WJCT music director David Luckin joined Ross to talk about Bob Dylan, who had been awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.

Pamela Goodman

Goodman said extending the voter registration deadline into next week will allow thousands of Florida residents, who otherwise would not have had the chance, to vote. She pointed to several naturalization ceremonies that were postponed last week due to Matthew. New voters are often registered at the conclusion of the ceremony.

State of the Arts

The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville reports that the creative economy has a $2.4 billion impact on the region. Some of those artists were honored Thursday at the annual luncheon. Allegretti talked about the importance of the arts in our community. Bronson and Reckley discussed how PNC got involved locally with the arts and how their grants are awarded.

Drybar

It’s not a typical place for women to get their hair done. Drybar does one thing: it gives women a fabulous blowout. It’s been a fast growing chain across the county with its first Florida location opening Saturday in Brooklyn. Ross spoke with Webb about the concept and what women can expect when they make an appointment.

Luckin on Dylan

The Nobel committee surprised many when it announced Thursday music legend Bob Dylan has been awarded the prize for literature. Luckin spoke to Ross about Dylan’s long career and how he has influence other singer-songwriters for decades.
