2/8/2018: UNF Poll; Mrs. Warren's Profession; Friday Musicale Fundraiser

UNF

Thursday on First Coast Connect we spoke with Mike Binder, the head of the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab, about the university’ latest polling numbers regarding a potential race between Sen. Bill Nelson and Gov. Rick Scott and other issues (01:14).

We heard about the upcoming production of George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession at Jacksonville University with actresses Deborah Jordan, who also heads the acting department, and sophomore Sarah Stepp (32:37).

We learned about the upcoming fundraiser for Friday Musicale with Executive Director Naomi Sheridan and venue director Jeff Tawny (46:00).

UNF Poll

Anew poll out this week from UNF’s Public Opinion Research Lab found Florida Senator Bill Nelson is in the lead for the upcoming Senate election, with Governor Rick Scott trailing close behind.

Scott, a Republican, is widely expected to challenge Nelson, a Democrat, for the Senate seat, which Nelson has held since 2000.

UNF’s polling also shows a majority of the state’s voters disapprove of the job President Trump is doing.

More numbers will be coming out from the lab on Monday.

Mrs. Warren’s Profession

It’s a classic play that examines the notion that Victorian women were forced into prostitution not out of moral indecency, but economic necessity, not unlike modern times.

George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession is considered to be one of his most controversial and greatest works.

At the height of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, the play is a re-examination of the sociocultural relationships between men and women.

The Department of Theatre at the College of Fine Arts at Jacksonville University will perform the play beginning next Friday.

Friday Musicale Fundraiser

It’s been part of the Jacksonville arts scene in some form since 1890.

The present day Friday Musicale has been around since 1923 and is a fixture on Oak Street in Riverside.

Friday Musicale has seen great performances from artists from around the world and has helped train great young musicians for decades.

Itsthird annual fundraiser will be held February 17th and is a throwback to the USO era.
