The Florida Attorney General’s Office has officially filed its appeal to U.S. District Court Judge Mark Walker’s felon voting rights ruling. In February, Judge Walker ruled Florida’s current voting rights restoration system is unconstitutional and ordered Governor Rick Scott to create a new system. But, Scott says the current clemency board protects victims.
“If you stop and think about it, these are felons they’re talking about. These are felons that could be murderers. Some could commit crimes against kids. There’s a variety of individuals like this. And so, if you look at the clemency board, we look at a variety of things. We look at their domestic violence issues, we look at mortgage fraud issues, we look at a variety of things because we want people to think about how do we take care of the victims of these things. These are horrible crimes that they’ve committed,” Scott says.
Governor Rick Scott was originally ordered to create a new voting rights restoration system by April 26th.
