Beach Boulevard Collapse Expected To Be Fixed In Less Than A Week

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has a plan in place to fix the big hole that opened Wednesday on Beach Boulevard near Hodges Boulevard.

Termed a void, FDOT has determined it was caused by a caved in 48-inch drainage pipe. It’s been contained and maintenance crews are working to ensure drainage continues to flow properly, according to Hampton Ray at FDOT.

Ray said the heavy rain caused the void to develop at an accelerated rate which in turn triggered the road to cave in.

Maintenance crews expect the work will be completed in less than a week, barring unforeseen conditions and weather delays, Ray said in an email to WJCT News.

Single lane closures on Beach Boulevard may be necessary as crews work to repair the void in the right-turn lane of east bound Beach Boulevard, near the Wolf Creek Condominiums at Falcon Ridge Place.

Our News4Jax partner reported the opening is about 33 feet long and 18 feet wide and estimated to be about 20 feet deep.
