Kristin Jacobs is once again running for the Florida House District 96 seat in Northwest Broward. During her first term, she was the leading voice behind the South Florida Regional Climate Compact, an agreement and model for counties across the state of Florida to address climate change. Jacobs also led a significant push for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act and is the leading Democrat on the Agricultural Committee. Jacobs has serious concerns about the future of agriculture in the state with declining citrus and deteriorating algae blooms. Jacobs joined us in the studio to discuss her desire to run for office and the primary issues in her campaign: sea level rise, gun legislation and agriculture.

A new investigation by the Palm Beach Post found that a $1 million program to test nearly 1,000 rape kits in Palm Beach County hasn’t led to a single arrest. The initiative was started in 2016 by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office as law enforcement agencies across the country pushed through a backlog of untested rape kits. The Sheriff’s Office argues that it hasn't  finished testing all of the kits and officers are close to making arrests in a few cases. Sundial was joined  today by Nicole Bishop, the director of victim and justice services in Palm Beach County — which works directly with both sexual assault victims and law enforcement -- and Daphne Duran, one of the reporters behind the Palm Beach Post investigation.

This week marks the 30th anniversary of Shark Week. The cable series on Discovery Channel has given sharks center stage for many years and educated the public. In South Florida, sharks such as the blue shark, tiger shark and hammerhead sharks face tons of threats — most of them human-caused. On Sundial today was assistant director and marine biologist Stephen Cain with the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, who shared the latest knowledge in shark research.
