Cummer Museum Offering Free Admission In Response To Charleston Shooting

The Cummer Museum is offering free admission this weekend to provide a place for reflection in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s mass shooting at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Cummer spokeswoman Amber Sesnick says the museum’s featured exhibit is especially relevant to this week’s tragedy.

“'Whitfield Lovell: Deep River' is an installation piece with projections of a river scene on the wall,” Sesnick said. “It has round tondos of anonymous African-American individuals from between the Civil War and civil rights time periods.”

The installation explores the idea of slaves' crossing the Tennessee River in search of freedom. Their drawings are done in Conte’ crayon on large wooden discs.

The Cummer’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free both days.
