The Florida Department of Transportation is awarding $44.4 million for the expansion of bicycle and pedestrian trails, including three projects in St. Johns, one in Putnam and one in Flagler county.

The selected projects, 45 in total, are first-year endeavors and are getting funding under the SUN Trail program.

Projects include the construction of 11 separate trail segments, which will add or improve about 20 miles of trail to the state’s trail system. Another 34 projects are in the pre-construction phases of work.

The St. Johns projects are part of the larger St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop Trail, a large 270-mile loop that stretches from St. Johns County down into Volusia County.

The St. Johns River Sea Loop is one of two major regional trails systems selected as priorities by the Florida Greenways and Trails Council.
