Food plays a big part in the holidays but many families on the First Coast would go hungry without the help of organizations like Feeding Northeast Florida.
The organization, along with a hunger relief network of 160 social service agencies, serves people in eight northeast Florida counties including Duval.
Saturday, the food bank, along with United Healthcare, will host a food giveaway at the Kipp Jacksonville Schools at 1440 N. McDuff Avenue, northwest of downtown.
Feeding Northeast Florida President and CEO Frank Castillo says some people are just one set-back away from not having enough to eat.
“You know, it can be something as simple as a single mother who has a child who becomes ill — she’s had to miss a couple days of work and that shortfall in her paycheck creates an inability to secure food,” said Castillo
The food giveaway will go from 8 to 11 Saturday morning at KIPP. It’s open to everyone in need.
