Four Jacksonville Mayoral Candidates Compete For Votes In Final Debate

The second and final mayoral debate took place at Jacksonville University Thursday night.

All four mayoral candidates participated in the debate: Omega Allen with no party affiliation, Republican City Councilman Bill Bishop, former head of the Florida Republican Party Lenny Curry and Democratic incumbent Mayor Alvin Brown.

Over the course of the hour long event, they made it very clear where they stand on the issues of crime, the St. Johns River, Jacksonville’s harbor, downtown development and taxes.

But it was in their closing remarks that the candidates brought home their message, leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind what they’re about and why they deserve to win.

Allen said, "Do you know how much you win with the long shot?  I am Jacksonville’s ticket out of the debacle that we’re in. I am Jacksonville’s ticket out of the good old boys regime. If you want change, I’m your agent of change. If you want things done differently, I represent that difference."

Bishop said, "For years we’ve all said we want political candidates that have the experience for the office they’re pursuing, will tell you the truth, answer your questions and not be in the pockets of special interests. I am that guy in this race."

Brown said, "Jacksonville is on the move. Downtown is booming. There’s a great opportunity to make sure we can continue that. I want your vote: Alvin Brown, four more years."

Curry said, "Because of the lack of leadership, our city is less safe and it’s been financially mismanaged. We can do better. I have a plan and a vision that can restore Jacksonville to greatness. I’m asking for your vote tonight. We can do this together."

Early voting ends this Sunday. Election Day is Tuesday, March 24.
