The National Flood Insurance Program is set to expire December 7th at midnight.

Audio version of the story.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) offers flood insurance to residents in high-risk zones. Florida has more than 1.75 million direct and underwritten policies in the NFIP. That’s more than any other state.

If it’s not reauthorized, millions of Floridians will eventually have to turn to private flood insurance.

The 50 year program has had several lapses over the years but has always come back, leaving many skeptical it will end permanently. The program has to be reauthorized by Congress but has so far not received a long-term extension.
