A local teacher is getting a big presidential honor.
Angela Phillips, of Chets Creek Elementary School, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Every year, 213 teachers and educators are given this award for achievements in math and science education.
Phillips has taught math and science at Chets Creek for 16 years. In her time as educator, she has consulted schools both locally and nationally, conducted meetings of the math council and helped write the district's math assessments.
Phillips says this honor is "humbling and fulfilling." Duval County Schools Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said "this recognition does more than just affirm Ms. Phillips' impact on her students, school and the district."
Phillips, and the other award winners, will receive their prize during a special ceremony in Washington D.C. on Sept. 8. The winners will also get a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.
Phillips is the second Chets Creek educator to receive the award. Phillips is also a National Board Certified Teacher and was the teacher of the year at her school in 2001.
