Political observers say this race is likely to be the most negative and lavishly funded campaign Florida has ever seen.
The race will ramp up in the coming months, following last night's reelection of potential Republican presidential hopeful New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and the narrow election of Democrat Terry McAuliffe as governor of Virginia.
McAuliffe's win marks the first time that post has been held by a candidate of the same party as a sitting U.S. President since 1977.
