Sleet, Wet Snow Possible On First Coast This Week

Jan 2, 2018

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Nassau and Baker Counties in Florida, and for all of southeast Georgia Wednesday,  where a significant accumulation of ice and snow are expected.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Duval and Clay counties with the possibility of minor icing in the morning.

Florida Public Radio Meteorologist Jeff Huffman says Wednesday morning commuters will need to be prepared.

“I think it’s the early morning hours when roads will be tricky, especially on the west and northwest sides of Jacksonville. That’s where freezing rain is most likely before it transitions to rain midday. It’s gonna be all rain from Jacksonville south and east but in all areas it could end as a brief period of light snow Wednesday afternoon with little or no accumulation,” said Huffman.

Huffman says there could be three or four hard freezes in a row associated with this storm system.

“I expect the precipitation will begin just after midnight, and where temperatures are below freezing, ice could accumulate on elevated surfaces, bridges and overpasses,” said Huffman.

Huffman said there could be three or four hard freezes in a row associated with this storm system. A significant warm up is not expected until Sunday.
