Middleburg Couple Charged In Burning-Van Murder Of Jacksonville Man

A divorced Middleburg couple charged murder of a man whose body was found in a burning car in Jennings State Forest Tuesday were ordered held without bond at a first-appearance hearing Friday. 

Joseph White, 37, and Bobbi White, 47, are charged with the murder of 35-year-old Jacksonville man Corey Lane. The Whites are also charged with armed robbery, armed burglary, arson and possession of heroin. Bobbi White faces an additional charge of possession of cocaine. They will be appointed separate attorneys and return for another hearing Jan. 13.

Clay County police are asking for help in their investigation of a body found in a burning car Tuesday morning in Middleburg.

In a written statement, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office says the body was discovered around 8:15 a.m. on a one-lane dirt road in Jennings State Forest.

Country singer Slim Whitman, the high-pitched yodeler who sold millions of records through ever-present TV ads in the 1980s and 1990s and a longtime Middleburg resident, died early Wednesday morning . He was 89-years-old.

Whitman died of heart failure at Orange Park Medical Center, his son-in-law Roy Beagle said.

Whitman's tenor falsetto and ebony mustache and sideburns became global trademarks – and an inspiration for countless jokes – thanks to the TV commercials that pitched his records.
