Jacksonville Teens Raising Money For Homeless Peers

Jacksonville teens are kicking off an online fundraiser for their homeless peers.

Scholarships are up for grabs to help Florida students pay for college.  And the application deadlines are approaching. 

One is from the Florida Association of Supervisors of Elections.  College students majoring in political science, public administration, business, journalism or mass communications have until March 14 to apply for one of three $1,200 scholarships.

Three $1,200 college scholarships are available from Florida’s election supervisors.

To be eligible, a student must be a junior enrolled at a Florida college or university; registered to vote; and majoring in business, political science, mass communications or journalism.

A Clay County Election Supervisor spokeswoman says those are the fields that align best with supervisors' purpose.

  The Interfaith Center at the University of North Florida recently awarded its first scholarship for interfaith community service to two students committed to interfaith work.

The Interfaith Center offers services to educate students and advance cooperation.

During an appearance on WJCT's “First Coast Connect,” Kalilah Jamall and Clare Stern, winners of the scholarship, talked about their interfaith work.

Jacksonville University

A new major federal science grant will give more Jacksonville University students a leg up in the fields of science, technology, math and engineering.

The National Science Foundation has just named Jacksonville University the newest recipient of a $625,000 grant--the largest grant JU has received from the federal science agency to date.

JU Biology Professor Lee Ann Clements, who chairs the university's the science and mathematics division, said the university received the news about a week ago.

The University of North Florida is throwing itself a big party tonight to celebrate the success of a 4-year long fundraising campaign that exceeded its goal by $20 million. 

The goal of UNF’s Power of Transformation fundraiser was to raise $110 million by the end of 2012.  University President John Delaney says it was a gamble.

"We announced in 2009 that we were going to kick off a capital campaign and we debated - because that was in the throes of the recession - whether or not we should go forward with it."
