Capital Report: September 8, 2023

The Florida Supreme Court began hearing arguments today (Friday) concerning Florida’s new restrictions on abortion. Regan McCarthy was at the high court, heard the proceedings and caught the demonstrations going on outside. She talked it over with Tom Flanigan.

The Florida Supreme Court also considered the 2014 case of an 18-year old who was struck and killed by a drunk driver who was also below the legal drinking age. Tom Flanigan has that story.

Hurricane Idalia hit Madison County hard. It’s a rural county in North Central Florida, up near the Georgia line. But as Margie Menzel reports, it’s handy for people from other states and other parts of Florida who want to come help.

Major Hurricane Idalia left its mark on coastal Central Florida and on the Big Bend. With recovery efforts ongoing, WLRN’s Tom Hudson has the story of how one family in Steinhatchee (STEEN-hatchee) moved their businesses before the storm, and what they encountered when they returned.

A 7-acre lot near Wakulla Springs could soon be slated for environmental protection. The lot had previously been eyed for a gas station, but sits on environmentally sensitive land, and local environmentalists were concerned that a gas station could pollute nearby Wakulla Springs. Adrian Andrews has more on how that decision could lead the state to potentially becoming the buyer.

Fans of the late Jimmy Buffett have started a petition to change the name of the airport in Key West to Jimmy Buffett International Airport. WLRN’s Ammy Sanchez tells us more.

Buffett also had a fond friendship with former Florida Governor Bob Graham. Tom Flanigan recounts when Buffett showed up at a governor’s mansion party for the Capital Press Corps.
