Governor Ron DeSantis hosted a virtual discussion this week with Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo and several doctors about the newly approved COVID-19 booster shots. The DeSantis administration is recommending against anyone under age 65 getting the boosters. That’s the opposite of federal guidance, as Gina Jordan reports.

Florida’s jobless rate in August remained at 2.7% as Tom Flanigan reports.

One of the unintended consequences of banning books … is making some people want to read them MORE. With more books being challenged in school districts around Florida thanks to a new state law, a club has been formed in Miami to read banned books. WLRN’s Kate Payne went to the first meeting … and introduces us to the founder.

New social studies teaching standards in Florida public schools have taken aim at Black history. That follows the banning of an AP African American History course. The move faced sharp criticism by educators and civil rights groups. Some private schools are pushing back and offering educational experiences rich in civil rights history, as WMFE’s Danielle Prieur reports.

The federal government is reviewing a piece of legislation that sets funding for farmers and nutrition assistance programs. It’s the U.S. farm bill and it comes around every few years to be reauthorized. but as Adrian Andrews reports, Florida’s low-income families may be at risk of losing out of on some of those benefits.

The top Federal Reserve banker in the southeast is addressing high interest rates and inflation. He spoke during a recent visit to Broward County, and suggested policymakers should do whatever it takes to get inflation back in check.
