As the first legislative committees get underway in the run up to the lawmaking session that starts in January, one panel got an update on a law passed last year that aims at addressing what Governor Ron DeSantis calls a “fatherhood crisis.” Regan McCarthy has more.

Miami Republican Representative Daniel Perez has been designated as the next Florida House speaker. Perez became a state lawmaker during a special election in 2017. Now, he’ll prepare to take over the House leadership role after next year’s elections. WMNF’s Chris Young reports a ceremony was held in the House Monday (9/18).

Taylor County residents say it feels like they’re facing one disaster after another. Less than a month after Hurricane Idalia crashed through the community as a Category 3 storm, news broke that Perry’s paper mill plant will be closing its doors after nearly 70 years. That means a loss of more than 500 jobs in a community already struggling to make ends meet. But as Adrian Andrews reports, residents are once again preparing to face the problem together.

Florida has more people relying on Medicare for their health insurance than any other state except one. The head of Medicare spoke with Tom Hudson on The Florida Roundup about what to expect.

Florida residents and visitors may soon be able to bet on their favorite sports team from their cell phone. The Seminole Tribe of Florida had a big win in court this month -- which could mean a return of mobile betting after it was halted 2 years ago. Keith Buckley is a business and sports management professor at Rollins College…and doubles as the school’s head soccer coach. He tells WMFE's Talia Blake the Tribe will partner with the Hard Rock Casino for online sports betting in the sunshine state.

The Guiness Book of World Records has a new and unusual entry thanks to hurricane season. WGCU’s Mike Braun reports.

The dean of Florida reporters has died. Lucy Morgan was a Pulitzer Prize winner and former Tallahassee bureau chief of the then-St. Petersburg Times. She started her career at a time when not many women held top positions in newsrooms, but quickly commanded respect for her work ethic and her passion for truth. Morgan died Wednesday at 82. Margie Menzel has this remembrance.
