Jacksonville City Council members split on accepting pay raises this year with seven members taking a raise while 11 members turned it down in their first go-round with a new way for setting their pay.
Council members have always been able to refuse a pay raise, but this is the first year that all council members must each fill out forms stating whether they will receive or reject a salary increase.
That new requirement came after City Council member Rory Diamond said in March automatic pay raises for council members made them "swamp creatures" while he faced charges of "political grandstanding" on a hot-button issue.
