Hostage escapes during SWAT standoff; suspect arrested
A lengthy SWAT standoff and hostage situation at a Southside business ended peacefully with the arrest of an armed and "agitated" suspect after the lone hostage had already made it to safety, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.
It began about 11:30 a.m. when a man came into the unidentified business in the 4100 block carrying a gun and told the few people there to get out except one employee, Chief T.K. Waters said. The man was acting agitated and told her to call police.
At one point he fired a shot out the window and two into the ceiling, Waters said. The woman was able to calmly talk with him, defusing the situation. It also gave her an opportunity to exit the business safely.
