Jacksonville voters recently told a University of North Florida pollster that crime is their top local concern.

As Sheriff Mike Williams is not running again due to term limits, the crowd of candidates to replace him is getting bigger.

News4Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson, a familiar face on local airwaves, served decades with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and was the former spokesman for the agency. Jefferson declared his candidacy last week.

Guest: Ken Jefferson, sheriff candidate.

Crisis in Ukraine

According to a Sunday night White House announcement, President Biden has agreed "in principle" to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future, provided Russia has not invaded Ukraine. The meeting is anticipated after a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

U.S. intelligence found that Russian military commanders received orders to proceed with a Ukrainian invasion.

Guest: UN ambassador Nancy Soderberg, distinguished visiting scholar and director of UNF's Public Service Leadership Program.

“Last of the Right Whales”

North Atlantic right whales are dying faster than they can reproduce. With only about 330 whales remaining, they rarely die of natural causes. Their biggest threats include ship accidents and lethal injuries from fishing gear. Unless we step up protection, they could be extinct in 20 years.

The new documentary “Last of the Right Whales” follows the whale’s migration and brings a message of hope. The film is screening this week in Jacksonville, and the story has some local ties.

Guest: Nadine Pequeneza, producer and director.

Local sports

From the Daytona 500 to the start of March Madness and the Jacksonville Iceman burning up the ice, there is lots going on in local sports.

Guest: WJCT Sports Analyst Josh Torres.
