04/12/16: Equal Pay; Colorectal Cancer; Hope Haven; OneJax Humanitarian Awards

Equal Pay

April 12 is the day set aside as Equal Pay Day.

It’s the day that marks how far into the year women on average have to work to catch up with men's earnings from the previous year.

Despite years of calls for change, the gender pay gap remains in place in the American workplace.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a national leader in the quest for equal pay for equal work.

We speak with Lisa Maatz, vice president of government relations for AAUW, about their new researching concerning the gender pay gap.

Colorectal Cancer

Despite national guidelines, one in three adults over the age of 50 do not get screened for colon cancer as recommended.

Colon cancer is preventable with proper screening. However, the lack of screening means that the disease remains the second-leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. and death rates could continue to climb.

There’s a new option available here in Jacksonville with the potential to change how we screen for colon cancer. Cologuard is the first and only FDA approved noninvasive stool DNA screening test for colorectal cancer.

Dr. Kyle Etzkorn, a local physician who is prescribing Cologuard to his patients, joins us with more.

Hope Haven

Hope Haven children's clinic and family center is celebrating 90 years of service on the First Coast.

That’s nearly a century of helping children, young adults and families realize their full potential.

First founded in 1926 as a children's hospital, Hope Haven transforms 5,000 families every year, by providing a range of care and services to kids and families with special needs.

We speak with Joanne Robertson, CEO of Hope Haven, about their work over the past 90 years.
