07/06/15: Voices Of The River; Women's Center Series; Astronaut Norm Thagard; Cole Pepper

The "Voices of the River" event this weekend aims to spotlight the important role the St. Johns River has played in our area’s history and continues to play today. The MOSH, the Cummer Museum and the Ritz Theatre will each have programming that explores the people and perspectives that have interacted with the St. Johns River through the years. This part of the larger Cultural Fusion Year of the River initiative celebrating the St. Johns River all throughout 2015 as the "cultural current of our city" with an entire year of programming by more than 50 cultural and environmental institutions, including WJCT. We speak with Maria Hane, Executive Director of the Museum of Science and History, St. Johns Riverkeeper Lisa Rinaman, and Hope McMath, Executive Director at the Cummer Museum.
The Women’s Center of Jacksonville is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special presentation by documentary filmmaker Amy Ziering. Her latest film, "The Hunting Ground, " explore rape culture on college campuses. We discuss  the topic with Shirley Webb, Executive Director of the Women's Center of Jacksonville, and Lise Everly, Chair of the Women's Center speaker series.

Tomorrow, Community Health Outreach will commemorate the 20th anniversary of former NASA Astronaut and Jacksonville resident Dr. Norm Thagard’s return from the Russian Mir 18 mission. Dr. Thagard’s first public appearance after that historic flight was made here in Jacksonville. He’s a graduate of Paxon School for Advanced Studies and the road in front of the school still bears his name. The events honoring Dr. Thagard will be part of a fundraising effort for the Healing Hands Clinic. He joins us with a look at his career.
