07/11/16: Lori Boyer; Author J.D. Vance; Relatives As Parents Program; Cole Pepper

Lori Boyer

Two-term Jacksonville City Council member Lori Boyer takes the reins this month as that body’s new president, promising to push an ambitious agenda for the city.

Boyer’s tenure comes amid big financial challenges for Jacksonville, as well as growing concerns about public safety and tensions between the black community and police.

Lori Boyer joins us to discuss her priorities for the next year.

J.D. Vance

We speak with author J.D. Vance about his new book, "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis."

From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, it’s a powerful account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town, and a compelling look at the struggles of America’s white working class.

Despite some daunting obstacles, Vance overcame a tough childhood and graduated from Yale Law School. He has a unique perspective on what it’s like to move sometimes very painfully between two worlds: the working class and the nation’s elite.

Relatives as Parents Program

The percentage of older Americans raising their own grandchildren just when they thought they were done with child rearing is growing.

Aging True of Jacksonville's Relatives as Parents Program(RAPPJax) works to support grandparents and other older relatives caring for children under the age of 18 by providing training, transportation, and more.

Melynda Rackley, manager of the Relatives as Parents Program, joins us with a preview of the group's upcoming retreat for older caregivers.

Cole Pepper

We recap the week's local sports news with WJCT News contributor Cole Pepper, including a look at the Jacksonville Armada's win over Puerto Rico FC this weekend.

Sean Birch joined the WJCT team in late 2011 and was with the company until 2016.
