10/23/18: Nikki Fried, After-School Programs, Seniors Beaches Event

Fried campaign
Democratic Florida Agriculture Commissioner candidate Nikki Fried

Democratic Florida Agriculture Commissioner candidate Nikki Fried joined us on Tuesday’s First Coast Connect.

She made her case as to why she could do a better job than Republican candidate Matt Caldwell, who is currently a State Representative.

Fried, a medical-marijuana lobbyist, and Caldwell debated Sunday in Miami.

She said she wants to transform the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, with everything from cannabis to gun regulation on the table.

An invitation to appear on First Coast Connect has also been extended to the Caldwell campaign.

After-School Programs

Local organizations will be celebrating 20 years of city-funded after-school programs during the nationwide Lights On Afterschool event on Thursday.

Leon Baxton, Chief Operating Officer at Communities In Schools of Jacksonville, joined us with a look at the impact after-school programs have made.

A list of programs planned in Jacksonville and across the country Thursday is available at this Lights On Afterschool webpage

Celebrating Seniors

The Beaches Council on Aging is dedicated to helping seniors at the beaches live healthy, independent lives, including making sure they have mobility.

Council CEO Gary Tiller told us about the “Engage at Any Age: A Senior Celebration” on Monday, Oct. 29 at the Jacksonville Beach Community Center and Exhibition Hall.

Editor’s Note: The Lights On Afterschool organization spells “Afterschool” as one word.
