10/31/19: Human Trafficking; 'Dreaming The Marsh;' Smart Women Make Change; Weekend Events

LEMBAGAI KITA / WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

According to the Human Trafficking Hotline, Florida ranks third for human trafficking cases in the U.S., behind California and Texas. Human trafficking can include both forced labor and sexual exploitation.

We spoke with Sandra Shin and Tacoma Perry of Hope 4 Freedom, about their work to educate and  advocate for survivors, along with preventing human trafficking in our community, as well as Saturday’s Hope 4 Freedom Walk.

Dreaming the Marsh

This weekend, Florida author Elizabeth McCulloch will kick off the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Literary Series. Rawlings is the famed Florida author of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Yearling.

The event, "Loving the Prairie, Dreaming the Marsh," will spotlight McCulloch’s new book Dreaming the Marsh. She joined us with a preview.

Smart Women Make Change

Smart Women Make Change is coming up Monday at the Downtown Main Library. Women-owned businesses will be in the spotlight, including a couple created by middle school girls. Tiffany Mackey Guthrie, Director of Development for Junior Achievement of North Florida, joined us with more info.

Weekend Events

It's Florida-Georgia Weekend, which includes the big game itself, RV City and the  the Bold City Bash.

Saturday night will also be a big night for live music.  The Dreamers will be at 1904 Music Hall, and Here Come the Mummies will be at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall.

And, the Right Whale Festival, which has moved from Jacksonville Beach to Fernandina Beach, takes place on Saturday and Sunday.

Finally, let's not fortget the Jaguars. If college football is not your cup of tea, the Jags will play the Texans in London on Sunday. Riley Leuthold, General Manager at Posting House in San Marco, joined us to talk about a very rad way to view the game – a watch party co-hosted by Jax is Rad, with a brunch spread by BrewBox Foods.
