A 2017 vigil in Jacksonville calls for the removal of Confederate monuments from public places.

Thursday on First Coast Connect we heard about Saturday’s History Revealed walking tour of Confederate Statues and the history of Jacksonville’s racial past with #TakeEmDownJax co-founder Kris Kiernan, historian and author Tim Gilmore and Wells Todd from the Jacksonville Progressive Coalition (01:05).

 

We listened to a rebroadcast of a 2017 interview with Peggy Bulger. She is one of Florida’s most prominent folklorists and is the author of the book Stetson Kennedy, Applied Folklore and Cultural Advocacy(30:13).

At 9 a.m. Sunday, St. Johns Cathedral celebrates St. Francis’ Day with the annual blessing of the animals in Cathedral Park. We heard about it with St. Johns Dean Kate Moorehead and Lindsey Layendecker with the Jacksonville Humane Society (37:13).

Kerry Speckman joined us to talk about several upcoming events including the inaugural fundraiser party forRenaissance Jax featuring Nobel Prize winner and Jacksonville-native Dr. Andy Howell. She also told us about this weekend’s River City Pride celebration in Five Points and Oktoberfest, which will be held Saturday in Springfield (46:00).
