11/15/2018: Fla. Recount; Downtown Convention Center; StoryCorps In Jax

Thursday on First Coast Connect we looked at the ongoing twists in Florida’s recount, including the latest turn as a federal judge gives voters until Saturday to fix rejected signature ballots. But that’s already being appealed.

Downtown Business News

Mayor Lenny Curry has said in a letter he's concerned about the timing and financial requirements of a new downtown Jacksonville convention center.

That news comes as he and the city will start looking for contractors in January to eventually tear down the elevated Hart Bridge ramp system that runs along Gator Bowl Boulevard next to the sports complex.

Treating Pancreatic Cancer

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

Although it’s not one of the most common cancers in this country, it is one of the most deadly.

Dr. Michael Wallace is a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. He joined us with a look at what’s on the horizon for the treatment of pancreatic cancer and why so many younger people are getting this disease.

StoryCorps Comes to Jacksonville

The StoryCorps Airstream is setting up in Jacksonville at Memorial Park.

StoryCorps, the two-time Peabody Award winning nonprofit whose mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories, makes a cross country trip each year in a converted Airstream trailer.  It’s a traveling recording studio they call the “MobileBooth”.

This year Jacksonville has made the list of cities being visited.

The StoryCorps team is setting up at Memorial Park in Riverside where First Coast area residents will be able to tell their stories starting Sunday. StoryCorps will be in Jacksonville through December 21..
