4/26/2018: OneJax Free Speech; #realtalk; Palm Valley Historic District Festival

Thursday on First Coast Connect we talked about an upcoming OneJax Civil Discourse event with OneJax Director Nancy Broner and local philanthropist Laurie DeBow (01:12).

In America today the First Amendment protects all speech no matter how hateful, hurtful or vile. Will we continue to support absolute freedom of speech or have we reached a point in time where limitations are needed? As time passes will we join our European counterparts and pass explicit laws banning hate speech, or will we continue to support the idea that all speech – even hate speech – is good speech?

That’s the question that will be asked next week atUNF’s Civil Discourse event. (Full disclosure: WJCT is a sponsor of the series.)

#Realtalk: Gun Debate

On the latest installment of #Realtalk, hosted by WJCT contributor and board member Charles Griggs, the panel discussed gun issues. Local attorney Rhonda Peoples-Waters, Action News crime expert Ken Jefferson and Dr. Jeffrianne Wilder, sociology professor at UNF, weighed in (27:59).

Palm Valley Historic District Festival

We heard about the upcoming Palm Valley Historic District Festival with spokeswoman Donna Carrasco and local musician Robbie Litt (46:00). It’s going to be a fun family day of art, storytelling, music and fun Saturday at the Palm Valley Historic District Festival.

The Palm Valley Historic District Initiative aims to protect, preserve, and honor the rich and unique heritage of Palm Valley. Musician Robbie Lett and his band will perform as part of the fundraiser. We heard a song from his new album.
