A $50,000 gift to Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services means better treatments for the dogs and cats at the city’s animal shelter.

The Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Intern grant will fund a yearlong residency for a licensed veterinarian who wants more practice taking care of rescue animals.

The intern will work alongside the shelter’s two full-time vets and get hands-on experience managing everything from routine care to emergencies.

Applications are being accepted on the city’s website.

Maddie’s Fund is named for Dave and Cheryl Duffield’s miniature schnauzer.  The family foundation says it’s handed out nearly 240-million dollars since it was created in 1994.
