5/12/2017: Media Roundtable; Nancy Cappello; 'Eagles For Impact'; Mother's Day

Our Friday Media Roundtable on “First Coast Connect” included A.G. Gancarski from Florida Politics, blogger Fred Matthews, David Cawton from the Financial News and Daily Record and WJCT reporter Ryan Benk (01:48). We learned about breast cancer survival with advocate Nancy Cappello (33:35). Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville Diane Boyle (41:58) about the “Eagles for Impact” fundraiser at THE PLAYERS Championship. Sunday is Mother’s Day, Terri Mashour (45:36), who runs the website Fun 4 First Coast Kids had some ideas where you take mom on her day.

Media Roundtable

Our panel talked about former Congresswoman Corrine Brown being found guilty Thursday on 18 of 22 federal fraud and conspiracy charges. They also talked about the wildfires plaguing the region and how the 2018 race for Governor is heating up with Democrat Gwen Graham and Republican Adam Putnam officially launching their campaigns.

Nancy Cappello

Cappello was always diligent about eating healthy and getting her yearly mammograms. She exercised daily and did monthly self-breast exams. In 2003, an ultrasound revealed a lesion that was later determined to be Stage 3C breast cancer that had metastasized to 13 lymph nodes. Cappello later learned she had dense breast tissue, which affects about 40 percent of women, and can make detecting cancer on mammograms difficult since dense tissue appears white, just like cancer. Cappello, an award-winning breast cancer advocate and legislative activist, will share her story from 5:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. May 17 in the WJCT studios at the Sisisky-Kleppinger Annual Endowed Lecture for Women’s Health.

‘Eagles for Impact’

At this year at The PLAYERS Championship, Morgan Stanley will be promoting “Eagles for Impact” — for each eagle a player shoots, $5,000 will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville, and will go towards renovating the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. As of Friday morning, golfers hit 14 eagles at the TPC.

Mother’s Day

Sunday is Mother’s Day and after you make sure your mom gets that well-deserved breakfast in bed — and hopefully some flowers and chocolate — there are many of other options around town to show her a good time. Mashour’s web site lists local activities the whole family can enjoy.
