7/23/19: Calls For Puerto Rico's Governor To Resign; JaxTHRIVE; Generation W

News4Jax
Protestors rallied against Puerto Rico's governor outside the Duval County Courthouse on Monday.

Protesters in Jacksonville and other areas of Florida have voiced support for the people of Puerto Rico  calling for Governor Ricardo Rossello to resign.

The protests began after documents were released showing crude, sexist and homophobic chat messages between the governor and his closest aides.

People lined the street outside the Duval County Courthouse Monday night to make their voices heard.

Maria Garcia is with Jacksonville Community Action, the group that organized the protest. She joined Melissa Ross on First Coast Connect to talk about the Caribbean island's recent issues.

Since JaxTHRIVE began in 2017, more than 200 teens have volunteered over 4,000 hours to mentor approximately 85 refugee students in Jacksonville.

To fill that void, a high school student founded JaxTHRIVE, a youth-led organization that aims to inspire and educate refugee children.

Chase Magnano used the money he earned from his TV appearance on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire:  Whiz Kids Edition, to found his organization. He joined us to talk more about its accomplishments and goals.

The women who sign up to attend as a mentor connect with 1 to 3 girls seated next to them during Gen WOW's 2 hour program.

Generation W is a nonprofit organization that mentors young women of the future. It just opened registration for Generation WOW, an upcoming mentorship event for women.

For this year's gathering, Generation W is looking for 300 women in the Jacksonville area to sign up and connect with the 600 girls expected to attend.

We spoke with Generation W founder Donna Orender about Generation WOW.
