Starting Monday, Advanced Disposal is offering a free service to properly dispose of old, torn or faded American flags.

The company has several drop-off locations across Northeast Florida.

Advanced Disposal is accepting old American flags at its seven Northeast Florida sites.

Advanced Disposal Chief Marketing Officer Mary O’Brien says the company interacts with millions of customers every week.

“We just saw that it was a need and that we have a unique opportunity to fulfill that need,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien says the company will either retire the flags in accordance with the United States Flag Code. Or it will give them a second life.

O’Brien said, “We will ship it off to a specific facility that has the ability to recycle 90 percent of each flag back into nylon American flags.”

She says flag collection will become an annual tradition, taking place every year between June 1 and September 11.

Advanced Disposal CEO Richard Burke said, “It is an honor for us to offer this service to our customers and neighbors.”
