Aerial Video: 3-Alarm Fire Destroys Historic Downtown Jacksonville Building

Jacksonville firefighters doused hot spots overnight to prevent flare-ups as investigation ramped up into a three-alarm fire that destroyed a historic building Downtown and threatened neighboring businesses Saturday night.

WJCT News partner The Florida Times-Unionreported were no known injuries in the blaze that sent flames shooting hundreds of feet into the sky and blanketed downtown with thick smoke. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department first responders battled for more than an hour to bring the massive fire under control at Main and Union streets.

Two people passing by reported the fire to 911 about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters brought it under control about 7:15 p.m., JFRD said.

The fire burned so hot and spread so fast that it collapsed the roof and second floor of the abandoned Moulton & Kyle Funeral Home, which was deemed one of the city's most endangered historic buildings and survived past fires since being abandoned years ago.
