America's First Trial-By-Zoom Comes To Duval County

America's first Zoom trial with a binding verdict will come Monday to Duval County, to the court’s remote civil division CV-E, according to WJCT News partner The Florida Times-Union.

After months where criminal and civil justice has come to a halt, Duval County will see its first virtual trial Monday, a one-day affair for a lawsuit against a gentleman’s club.

Every aspect of the trial, from jury selection to deliberation, is being held virtually. On Thursday and Friday, potential jurors sat in front of their phones, iPads and laptops as a judge and the plaintiff's attorney asked them questions.

Cayla Griffin, who used to dance at the former Paradise Gentleman's Club, is suing the club for battery after she said she was beaten. The club is not defending itself, which means the trial will only determine damages.
