A new hospital for St. Johns County has moved off the drawing board and into the construction phase.

On Friday, Ascension St. Vincent's broke ground on a new $115 million hospital at I-95 and County Road 210.

Ascension St. Vincent's said the new hospital will create approximately 600 new jobs. It's scheduled to have 56 beds, including eight Intensive Care Unit beds, when it opens in 2022.

The St. Johns County hospital will also provide emergency services, cardiovascular care, orthopedics and musculoskeletal care, general surgical services, a laboratory and imaging services.

"Our research has shown that there's a great need for this level of care in the area, and we believe our community deserves to have convenient options for receiving high-quality, compassionate care close to home," said James Machado, regional president of Ascension St. Vincent's Southside and the new hospital in St. Johns County.
