Body Pulled From River After Truck Goes Over Buckman Bridge

Florida Highway Patrol

Police are still trying to determine exactly what happened on the Buckman Bridge Wednesday morning to send a Ford Ranger pick-up truck over the side and into the St. Johns River.Divers recovered a body believed to be that of the driver.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the truck was found lying upside down on the riverbed.  It was pulled out of the water about an hour before authorities located the body.

FHP Chief Keith Gaston told reporters the truck windows were open and that people had reported seeing someone swimming in the vicinity shortly after the truck went under.

“We know the person was out of the vehicle," he said. "They attempted to swim so we do know they were out of the vehicle at some point in time.”

The victim’s identity won’t been released until police have notified the family. The accident happened around 8 a.m., tying up Northbound traffic on the Buckman Bridge for more than 4 hours.
