The City Rescue Mission is opening its doors Wednesday for a Thanksgiving feast for the homeless and less fortunate. This morning on First Coast Connect, Penny Kievet stopped by to talk to Melissa Ross.

“We have the pleasure of bringing hope and Thanksgiving to all of our neighbors on the street,” Kievet said. "We are indeed expecting about 1,000 folks.”

The day starts with coffee, pastries and a worship service and ends with a traditional Thanksgiving lunch. Nearly all of this would be impossible without some help. Kievet said that she is extremely thankful for her volunteers.

“We have about 145 that are going to be joining us tomorrow just to serve,” she said. “Their whole purpose is to serve the people that are less fortunate than they.”

People celebrating Thanksgiving at City Rescue Mission will get to enjoy turkey, gravy, cornbread stuffing, macaroni and cheese, green beans, yams, cranberry sauce, rolls, and dessert—including pumpkin pie.

The event will take place at the CRM’s New Life Inn on State Street, starting at 9:30 am. Mayor Alvin Brown and the Jacksonville Roller Girls will be in attendance.
