The Black Creek River Basin in Clay County is flooding docks and yards after rainfall from Tropical Storm Elsa.
According to the National Weather Service, the basin’s North prong is currently at 16.28 feet and the South prong is at 15.33 feet, enough to meet the minor flooding stage. Both prongs were at less than 4 feet before Elsa rains.
Clay County Director of Emergency Management John Ward said docks and yards on Black Creek Drive and Creek Street were flooded in a video published to his department’s Facebook page this morning.
“We do not expect any water going into homes, but it's gonna be right on that cusp,” Ward said.
In an interview with WJCT News on Thursday afternoon after he surveyed the affected area, Ward said he still does not expect homes to flood. He said the flooding would only worsen if there is more heavy rain Thursday or Friday, which weather forecasts do not project.
The National Weather Service projects the basin will drop below 10 feet - the level where local officials begin to monitor the watershed for flooding - by Sunday or Monday afternoon.
