Cole Pepper: Jags Weigh Draft Options, Neil Joins Sharks Crüe As Minority Owner

Jacksonville Jaguars

Cole Pepper joined Melissa Ross with news on the upcoming NFL Draft, Jameis Winston, college sports, and a "mötley" new executive joining the Sharks "crüe" in his regular weekly sports wrap.

Jags weighing draft options

The NFL Draft is just three days away. What will the Jaguars do with the third pick of the draft?

Let's first start with some comments from General Manager Dave Caldwell and head coach Gus Bradley from Friday's pre-draft luncheon. I asked Caldwell to size up the possibilities for who the Jaguars could take this year.

At last year's pre-draft lunch Caldwell said the team was deciding between two players.

"I think last year I was comfortable in saying that because I had the feeling that there wasn't going to be anybody to trade up or want to trade up at that point in time," Caldwell said. "This year it's a little bit more different because there has been some activity, so to undoubtedly say I know who it's going to be, I couldn't do it this year."

Caldwell said he has "a very good idea" who the team would select if they keep their third pick. He also said he has spoken with two teams about trading the high position, but said the "competition would have to be right" for a trade beyond the top ten spots.

That's very interesting. There have already been some calls and Caldwell expects to have more conversations with teams as the draft approaches.

Here's why that's important. If the draft goes as we think it might, with the Texans taking South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and then the Rams taking Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins, then the Jaguars may want to trade back.

I think those are the two top guys for the Jaguars, but there haven't been many hints coming from the Jaguars scouting staff.

There could always be a surprise, in fact, head coach Gus Bradley told me that be expects that this draft will be a bit crazier than last years.

"There's going to be surprises," Bradley said. "We're going to be surprised who's there for us in the second round... I think we'll be surprised who's there in the third round, and in the fourth round."

So lets cut to the chase; who are the Jaguars going to take. Who do they need the most?

Well, based on last year's team, you would say pass rush and playmakers on offense. Consider that they added a batch of defensive linemen and a running back, Toby Gerhart (remember they let Maurice Jones-Drew walk in free agency, he's now an Oakland Raider).

The Jaguars are moving forward as if they are not going to have Justin Blackmon back from suspension, so receiver is a possibility. That's why Watkins would be such a good choice.

They could also be better on the offensive line, but you usually don't take a center or guard there. Would they take a tackle for the second straight year? They could take Jake Matthews, who was a college teammate of the Jaguars first round pick from last year, Luke Joeckel.

Pretty much all of the top ten picks are expected to be either passers, pass catchers, pass rushers, or the guys who block the pass rushers, which just shows you what's important in the NFL in this day and age.

Winston reinstated following seafood shoplifting citation

Just a moment here on Jameis Winston, who was reinstated to the FSU baseball team. The Heisman Trophy winner was ordered to complete 20 hours of community service after he "forgot" to pay for some crab legs at a Publix in Tallahassee.

Mötley Crüe frontman and Jacksonville Sharks minotity owner Vince Neil speaks with broadcasters during a recent Sharks game.

The No. 1 pick in next year's draft is Winston's to lose. He better not have more instances like this, or it's going to cost him big bucks and hurt his draft position.

Mötley Crüe's Neil part-owner of the Jacksonville Sharks

The Sharks lost to Arizona on Saturday night, but the big news with the Sharks is that Motley Crue front man Vince Neil officially became a part owner of the team.

He owns 10 percent, and Neil says that he wants to bring some rock-and-roll productions to the games.

That will be something to see, considering that the Sharks games are already pretty much a rock-and-roll football show.

Lady Dolphins set school record with LAX conference championship

Jacksonville University's women's lacrosse team won the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament yesterday with a dominant performance over Detroit, 18-4. JU plays Denver in the NCAA tournament.

Perhaps the bigger story is that it was the 8th conference championship of the school year for JU team, that's a school record, and all 8 of the championships came from JU's women's teams. It has been a terrific year for the lady Dolphins.
