The Coming Out Monologues (COM) incorporates monologues created by First Coast community members telling their ‘coming out’ stories. It also has helped raise money for two local nonprofits.
Adam Davis, a straight ally, a past performer and current story coach and Tristan Obenshain, a COM 2018 cast member spoke on Friday’s First Coast Connect about this weekend's show.
“It’s all about getting to the essences of each individual story. This isn’t something that is scripted. It isn’t my story. It’s everyone else who comes up on stage. I think that is what makes it most powerful for the audience,” said Davis.
These community inspired, created and led shows might be stories of falling in love, falling out of love, deciding to start a family, etc, all told within the context of LGBT lives and experiences.
After seeing a performance last year, Obenshain spoke on how and why he submitted his story. “I thought maybe my story might be able to help others that might have the same feelings that I had growing up.”
Coming Out Monologues is performing at WJCT, 100 Festival Park Ave, this Friday at 7 p.m and Saturday 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
