Council Takes Action Against Woodland Park Apartments Owners

Council votes to force owners to appear at next council meeting.

Woodland Park Apartments has been in the news a lot lately for poor conditions at the complex and for threats to shut off utilities for non-payment.

Monday, the Evansville City Council voted unanimously to issue a subpoena to have the owners of Woodland Park Holdings, LLC appear at their next meeting on August 9th, to answer for the issues at the complex.

Woodland Park Apartments is located in the 4th Ward.  In response to a question of whether all other measures have been taken to correct the problems, Councilman Alex Burton says the owners’ actions make the unusual step necessary.

“They’ve played this game, throughout, they’ve played this game.," Burton said, "It’s not that the building commission hasn’t been doing their job, it’s they know how to get around, they know all the shortcuts.”

Other council members spoke of residents at Woodland Park who don’t complain about the conditions out of fear of losing the only housing they can get. If the owners don’t appear before the council on August 9th, the council could initiate legal proceedings to get a court order to have them appear. However, since the company is a Limited Liability Corporation and the owners are not listed, that could be difficult to enforce.
