The parking lot at Tallahassee's Governors Square was the site of the Leon EMS Safety Fair on Saturday, April 6. There were full-size ambulances and other emergency vehicles on display at the Fair, along with a small remote controlled ambulance that talked.
Leon EMS Lieutenant Alison Hall and her team were doing child car seat safety checks.
"You should always go by whatever the car manual says and whatever the seat manual says," she advised. Read the directions! And sometimes they're printed on the seat if you lose the manual. And then Google is very helpful."
But sometimes just reading the directions isn't enough. County Commissioner Rick Minor brought his two car seats for inspection, which revealed a problem.
"They identified a recall and gave me a new car seat that was funded by a grant and they installed the new one for me," he said, by way of commendation to Hall and her team. "What I learned was even if you're a parent who believes you're on top of it with regards to your child's safety, come by the EMS Safety Fair because you might learn your car seat is under a recall."
Other safety fair attractions included a bicycle rodeo with helmet giveaways and CPR demonstrations.
