Crowne Plaza Agrees To Riverwalk Renovation

A plan to replace Jacksonville's Southbank Riverwalk behind the Crowne Plaza Hotel with concrete instead of wood is waiting on a final okay from the city's public works department.

Jacksonville City Councilman Don Redman says the hotel gave its permission today, but only if two conditions are met.

“The commitment of having two barges there to do the work off of so it will be done within a 16 day period of time.  They’re willing to basically shut down their business for that period of time, their convention business anyway, to allow the work to go on without disturbing them,” he said.

The Southbank Riverwalk runs approximately from Friendship Fountain east to the Duval County School Board Building.

Redman says the cost to replace all of the deteriorating wooden planks with concrete and pavers is around $17 million. The work is expected to be done by the end of the year.
