Florida’s 6th U.S. House District runs from Jacksonville’s southern suburbs southward to New Smyrna Beach. Two-term Republican incumbent Congressman Ron DeSantis is running for reelection there.
But Volusia County Democrat Bill McCullough is hoping to unseat him, even though District 6 leans heavily Republican, and DeSantis has raised about 170 times as much money as McCullough.
Nonetheless, he says changes in the Republican electorate and this year’s political climate are giving him hope.
He notes Republicans have requested fewer vote-by-mail ballots this year, compared to during the last presidential election. At the same time, “Democrats have increased the vote-by -mails,” he said.
“And the Democrats are fairly well united, versus the Republicans, who have a problem deciding, ‘Do we want to or do we not want to?’” he said.
McCullough spoke at the First Coast Tiger Bay Club Friday in Jacksonville. DeSantis was also invited but did not attend.
McCullough, a political newcomer, said if elected, his priority would be repairing infrastructure like highways and bridges. He says those projects would help improve the economy by giving people jobs.
