Duval County School Board member Darryl Willie is resigning from Teach For America in Jacksonville, where he’s executive director, to focus on his school district role and avoid the potential, as well as the perception, of a conflict of interest.

“I am going to be transitioning out of my role as the executive director of Teach For America so I can focus fully, and fully live in this role with you all because I want us to fly as high as we can and don’t need any types of interference with that,” Willie said during the School Board meeting Tuesday night.

OurFlorida Times-Union news partner reports Willie,  a former teacher, has served as a manager with the nationwide education nonprofit’s Jacksonville organization for about eight years. The organization trains and places recent college graduates into urban schools.

After the board meeting, Willie said his resignation probably will take effect in the middle of this month.
