EverBank Field, YMCA To Host Healthy Kids Day, First Coast Kids Triathlon

Jacksonville’s EverBank Field is opening its doors to families for this year’s Healthy Kids Day celebration on May 2.

The day is a national YMCA initiative designed to get kids moving and learning especially during summer vacation.

Activities at the football stadium will include everything from science experiments and a petting zoo to the popular kids’ triathlon. First Coast Kids Triathlon founder Tom Gildersleeve says EverBank Field makes this year’s race extra special.

"That’s really what it’s all about for us is to inspire kids, get them excited, and to give them confidence that they can accomplish other things so we’re excited about the great venue," Gildersleeve said. "What kid wouldn’t want to swim, bike, run and finish on the field here at EverBank Field."

The triathlon is for kids ages 6 to 15. This will be 13-year-old R.J. Higgins’ seventh time competing.

"I like the running part," Higgins said. Higgins says as he's approaching the finish line he likes to pretend he is Rocky.

According to organizers, this will be the first triathlon ever to finish inside an NFL stadium.

More than 3,000 kids are expected to participate in the race on May 2.
