Florida Dominates NCAA Sweet 16

Florida Times-Union

Three Florida teams have made it to college basketball's Sweet 16.

The University of Florida made it to their third consecutive Sweet 16 appearance for the first time in school history, but no one could have guessed that the Gators would be sharing that stage with a first-time NCAA tournament team from their own backyard.

2011 was the first time Florida had two teams advance to Sweet 16. Now in an unprecedented achievement in a normally football fanatic state, 15 seeded Florida Gulf Coast and number 2 seed Miami join the University of Florida with an opportunity to reach the Elite 8. The Gators achievement will be overshadowed by the fact that the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles are the first Number 15 seed in tournament history to make it to the Sweet 16. They will face each other Friday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Number two seed Miami will face off against Marquette in the Sweet 16. They stunned everyone in the ACC by capturing both the regular season crown and conference championship. The possibility now is that two Florida teams could meet in the Final Four.
